Infographic summary of the Department of Health’s Annual Report 2020 on the health inequality gaps between the most well off and least well deprived areas of Northern Ireland, and within Health and Social Care Trust and Local Government District areas. Data on seven health related indicators are presented: hospital activity, pregnancy and early years, alcohol, drugs and smoking, mental health and wellbeing, premature mortality, life expectancy and general health, major diseases and conditions.

A Conceptual Framework for Action on the Social Determinants of Health

This paper describes the review undertaken by the Comission on Social Determinants of Health, set up by the World Health Organization, to develop a conceptual framework on social determinants. The paper defines core values of health equity, human rights and distribution of power, before looking at previous theories such as the life course perspective that help understand the social determinants of health. It then provides the conceptual framework CSDH developed to tackle social determinants of health to improve health equity and lead to social justice.

This briefing focuses on what are health inequalities are, what causes them and ways in which at national and local level health inequalities can be reduced (what works and what does not work), including the importance of a preventative approach, and the need to work across all sector and across a wide range of policy makers, making the right to health is a social justice issue.

This briefing paper brings together the collected views of members of the Northern Ireland Confederation of Health and Social Care (NICON), putting forward their vision, core and supporting priorities to inform the public debate ahead of the May 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly Elections. They suggest four core priorties on investing in the workforce, sustainable funding, redesigning services to accessing value, and leaders being collaborative and empowered. NICON represents organisations working across Northern Ireland's integrated health and social care system and is part of the wider NHS Confederation of England and Wales.
