Tom Pollard’s report summaries and reflects on interviews with thirteen people who used two food banks in England. The report explores why the interviewees first sought food aid, the core driver of food bank use, the challenges with using the Government systems that are supposed to support them, the poverty trap and the impact of poverty on mental health.

Covid-19 Impact Survey November 2020 Results

The findings from NICVA's Covid-19 survey sent in November, which was sent to all heads of VCSE sector member organisations: 21% response rate (n=220). The survey's six questions looked at the impact Covid-19 was having on organisations, number of beneficiaries effected, any loss of funding/income (%), volunteers unable to volunteer (%), level of services/activities they were able to provide and the financial position they predicted they would be in over the 3-6 months.

Bridging the Gap Between Social Work and Community Development: post graduate training partnership

Fergal O'Brien et al. examine how although social work in the UK was closely aligned to community development, it has drifted apart in recent decades as social work has been focused on individual risks and needs. However, Social Work and Community Development departments in Northern Ireland were approached to reintroduce community development principles and practices in social work training. This paper documents the development through the partnership of the university, health trusts and professional awarding body of a post-graduate diploma in community development approaches for professional social workers. This paper explores the four year programme delivery and the learnings between the two professions at strategic, technical and operational level.
