The Foundation Years: preventing poor children becoming poor adults

This independent review by Frank Field, MP on poverty and life chances of children in the UK argues that life chance indicators need to be adopted, moving away from a focus on income poverty. These indicators will help measure the effectiveness of Government and the comummunity and voluntry sector in ensuring that during the Foundation Years (womb to age five) parents are helped to increase opportunities for their children, particularly for the most disavdantaged, in order to break intergenerational cycle of poverty. The report aims to establish the Foundation Years as of equal status and importance in the public mind to primary and secondary school years.

This publication provides guidance to small and medium sized charities on how to understand the evidence about how their social interventions improve people's health. The guidance presents the linkages between social determinants of health and health inequalities. It examines a wide of evidence demonstrating the impact of social determinants on health, looking at family, friends and communities, education and skills, work, money and resources, housing, our surroundings and the role of the voluntary sector. The report identifies clear system levers, as well as potential partners and collaborative working, to enable the CVSE to make a strong case to policy-makers, funders etc.

Poverty in Scotland 2022

This paper explores the impact of the cost of living crisis in in Scotland in 2022 , with recommendations. As official statistics were unreliable due to Covid-19, the findings were based on a poll of over 4,000 adults and people with lived experience from the End Poverty Scotland Group. The report focuses on the cost of living crisis, people's ability to deal with these spikes in costs, the impact on people's lived and people's opinions on society's (eg Government etc) responses to helping.
